His Eminence, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa
Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem
Your Eminence,
It is with profound sorrow that we have learned of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. His
death is a great loss not only to the Catholic Church but to all of humanity.
Pope Francis served for over a decade as a spiritual leader and moral statesman, inspiring
millions with his unwavering dedication to justice, compassion, and the dignity of every human
being. He was a beacon for the poor, the marginalized, and the oppressed, and his legacy will
live on in the countless lives he touched.
I had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican, along with a delegation from the
International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists. It was a deeply moving and historic
encounter that underscored his enduring commitment to interfaith dialogue, mutual respect, and
human rights. A record of that meeting is attached as a testament to his dedication.
His efforts to promote peace with justice and to combat antisemitism—while fostering a spirit of
brotherhood between Christians and Jews—will be remembered with lasting gratitude. Pope
Francis recognized the vital importance of interfaith engagement, even amidst challenges and
disagreements, and worked tirelessly to build bridges of understanding between communities.
We extend heartfelt condolences to Christians worldwide and in Israel on the loss of their great
spiritual father. As the President of Israel rightly said, Pope Francis was “a man of deep faith and
boundless compassion,” whose devotion to peace and the vulnerable will continue to resonate.
We join in his prayer for peace in the Middle East and the safe return of all hostages. May his
memory be a source of inspiration for kindness, unity, and hope.
On behalf of the IJL membership, I offer our deepest condolences to all those around the world
who have been uplifted by the life and leadership of Pope Francis. May his memory guide us
toward a future rooted in justice, peace, and human dignity.
Respectfully,
Meir Linzen
President
