JUSTICE - No. 71

39 Spring 2024 with a specific focus on antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred. Young people are provided with the tools needed on how to report a hate crime, while developing their sense of social responsibility to their local communities and British society. Marlon Solomon’s Conspiracy Theory Show Marlon Solomon’s Conspiracy Theory Show: A Lizard’s Tale examines links to rising antisemitism, racism, and extremism.26 The show, which covers a range of material from 9/11 to shape-shifting lizards and Holocaust denial, is a darkly comic tale of one man’s journey through the conspiracy underworld. Marlon examines why conspiracy theories are more popular than ever and how fake news is giving fresh currency to ancient slander. This is a comic tale that has proved to be a useful tool in tackling antisemitism. Difficult Conversations In the aftermath of October 7, it has become clear that while supporting several projects to address antisemitism, we must do more. We need to sustain our efforts. We cannot just switch projects on and off when we are faced with a crisis. We need to build community cohesion and we need to encourage conversations. We need to promote dialogue. In the past we have supported initiatives, including the following: − “Expanding Bridges not Boycotts” is a program developed by the Union of Jewish Students (UJS) to promote responsible dialogue on university and college campuses regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.27 − Solutions not Sides was founded in 2010. This education project inspires young people aged 15-25 by using the humanizing pedagogical experience of faceto-face interaction with moderate young Israelis and Palestinians to demonstrate to British young people the value of every human being, and the importance of tolerance and understanding when there are points of difference.28 − Forum of Discussion of Israel and Palestine works with young people to promote positive debate about Israel/Palestine.29 − Schools Linking brings together two carefully matched classes from demographically different schools in a planned program. Pupils from different social, ethnic, faith or geographical backgrounds enjoy meeting and learning together. The process helps pupils to explore identity, become comfortable with difference and build connections with their local community. We work with all kinds of schools including primary, secondary, and special schools.30 Schools Linking builds on research evidence about what works in connecting children to build their confidence in contact with others. It has been designed by teachers and is enjoyable and memorable for pupils. The Online Safety Act 202331 The Online Safety Act 2023 ensures that the UK is the safest place to be online, requiring all companies to take robust action against illegal content. The Act places a duty of care on all firms to protect adult users from illegal content such as child sexual abuse images, revenge pornography, threats to kill, selling firearms and terrorist material. Tech platforms must proactively prevent such material from reaching users. The Act promotes greater transparency and accountability for platforms, while ensuring that freedom of expression is protected. Changing the Conversation It is imperative that we recognize that antisemitism can take different forms. Education on how antisemitism manifests itself in the 21st century is key, particularly in relation to Israel. Perhaps using the term anti-Jewish racism will help refocus the conversation on explaining why something is antisemitic, rather than just denouncing it. Most people do not know the long history of malicious myths and conspiracy theories about Jews that have circulated for centuries. Countering antisemitism, therefore, requires more than “calling it out” – it requires educating people about antisemitism, so let’s start with what that is: anti-Jewish racism. n Lord Eric Pickles is the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Post Holocaust Issues and currently the Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
