JUSTICE - No. 66

3 Spring 2021 commend the United Nations and the Holocaust Outreach Programme for its remarkable work. The proceedings of the Side Event are published in this issue of JUSTICE. The IJL seeks to address three major issues during this coming year: 1. We will harness international law and national laws to help combat increasing antisemitism and hate crimes against individual Jews, as well as consistent attempts to prohibit Jewish practices of circumcision and Shechita in Europe (see the article by Isaac Shragay in this issue) and to forge effective legal measures against perpetrators. 2. We will combat attempts to delegitimize Israel and the very idea of the right of self-determination of the Jewish People; a modern manifestation of antisemitism. 3. We will address the politicization of the ICC. The Court is being used as part of an anti-Israel campaign instead of fulfilling its true role, as expressed in the preamble to the ICC Rome Statute: to deal with “unimaginable atrocities that deeply shock the conscience of humanity.” Imminent developments that will affect our approach: n The replacement of the ICC Prosecutor (see the article by Pnina Sharvit Baruch in this issue). n Policy changes of the new U.S. Administration and the nomination of a new U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. n The case in Poland with respect to two prominent Holocaust researchers — Professors Engelking and Grabowski — as they file an appeal to a higher court, and, eventually, to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The case relates to their academic research and the court ruling that the academics must apologize for suggesting in their work that a certain Edward Malinowski gave up Jews to the Nazi Germans. The IJL continues to provide legal support to these professors and will stand firm in defense of historical truth and freedom of academic research, including research on the Holocaust and crimes committed against Jews during World War II. We remain a small organization, yet rich in content and effective actions. We are blessed with talented dedicated members located in some twenty countries, ready to be mobilized to meet our goals. We reach out to lawyers and legal organizations, national and international, to try and develop a coordinated response, based on the primacy of law, to false accusations against Israel. Our challenge is to work together and make a difference through legal means. This issue of JUSTICE showcases a mosaic of subjects reflecting the challenges facing us all. We hope that you find it enlightening and appreciate your comments. May 2021, Sivan 5781 1. “Agen Ami” in Hebrew ( אג״ן עמי ) is “protect my people.” The initials (“Agen”) memorialize Eyal, Gilad and Naftali, three Israeli Jewish teenagers who were kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrori st s in 2014.
